My experience
My name is Robert Wishart and I have been working in quantitative analysis and impact evaluation for 10 years. My previous work has touched on a number of policy themes, such as education, the labour market and justice. You can find me on LinkedIn to see more about my professional experience.
My disability
I have retina pigmentosa, a condition that causes sight loss. I have very limited peripheral vision and can see very little in low-light settings.
Most people have almost 180 degrees of peripheral vision whilst I have approximately 10 degrees of vision (an example can be seen in the image on the right).. This means I often miss social cues such as handshakes and waves. I am also less likely to spot trip hazards.
I am almost totally blind in low-light settings. I may need to use a cane to navigate in these environments.
My access needs
I may do some things that appear unusual. For example:
- I may use a cane to navigate my way around.
- I may wear sunglasses indoors or on video calls if I am having difficulties with glare and bright light.
- In virtual meetings, I may need to turn off my camera.
Following the steps outlined below would also make it easier for me to work:
- If we meet in person, please introduce yourself by name.
- Please share materials in advance of meetings wherever possible.
- As far as possible, avodi the use of highlighting and colour coding, and if colours are needed, try and use highly contrasting colours.
- Please avoid copying tables and other content as images as far as possible as I use magnification and reading software that is incompatible with images.
